Sept 2008 UbiComp 2008 workshops

This week two of my students and some of my collaborators presented three workshop papers we had accepted at the UbiComp 2008 Workshops in Korea. These papers will form the basis for full paper submissions to future conferences and Journals as the methods, models and techniques are refined and validated through experiments (both user study and simulation).

  1. Rashid U. and Quigley A., “Ambient Displays in Academic Settings: Avoiding their Underutilization”, Ambient Information Systems Workshop at UbiComp 2008, September 21 COEX, Seoul, South Korea
  2. Clear A.K, Shannon R., Holland T., Dobson S., Quigley A. and Nixon P., “Multiverse: parallel visualisations of multivariate context information”, 2nd Workshop on Ubiquitous Systems Evaluation (USE ’08) at UbiComp 2008
  3. Kenny E., Shannon R. and Quigley A., “Stay-in-touch: a system for ambient social reminders”, Ambient Information Systems Workshop at UbiComp 2008, September 21 COEX, Seoul, South Korea

June 2008 UbiComp 2008 PC and MSR Redmond

UbiComp 2008 Logo
From September 21 – 24 this year UbiComp 2008 Tenth International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing will be held in the COEX, Seoul, South Korea. I’m currently attending the paper review meeting in Microsoft Research Redmond as a member of the international program committee. I’m looking forward to a fruitful discussion of the many fine papers which have been submitted this year.

Microsfot Home Prior to the PC meeting we have been visiting Microsoft Research for the day on a tour arranged by John Krumm and AJ Brush. We have had a tour of the “Microsoft Home” (picture from Seattle PI [ videos ]) which provoked some interesting discussion amongst the PC members who attend the tour. The home is an aesthetically pleasing environment with nice examples of technology layered in. Afterwards we toured Microsoft Research where we saw some advanced visual interfaces such as new version of the Surface and the Tablet PC InkSeine. This was followed by a Ubicomp PC Madness where all those who attended presented a quick overview on their research to each other. The day concluded with Pizza, bocceball and a time to meet the Microsoft interns in Building 99. Thanks again to John and AJ for the event!

Apr 2008 Pervasive 2008 Tutorial

Context-Rich but Keyboard-Free Pervasive Computing – Pervasive Computing User Interfaces – Aaron J Quigley – Pervasive 2008 Tutorials

Clearly there are classes of computing application which will rely on the classical screen, keyboard and mouse interfaces for sometime to come. However, we are seeing the emergence of pervasive computing applications and scenarios which go beyond the traditional application design or even mobile computing application design. Designing User Interfaces for the disappearing computer is difficult. By its very nature Pervasive Computing is trying to make the computer less of a focal point, making it, dare we say invisible! The challenge therefore becomes to provide simple, seamless, natural and context-aware interfaces to complex, subtle and oft invisible pervasive computing applications. Instead of overwhelming the user with a plethora of options, research as shown the need to develop personalized user interfaces that leverage past and group actions in user interface interaction. This tutorial will provide an overview of the approaches taken in the development of user interfaces for pervasive computing applications to date.

Nov 2007 UbiComp 2008 Program Committee

I was invited to serve on the UbiComp 2008 Program Committee. UbiComp is a top-tier conference. UbiComp 2008 is the Tenth International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and will be held in Seoul, South Korea from September 21 – 24, 2008. I look forward to working with my students on various submissions and participating in this program committee with my international colleagues.

Oct 2007 Tom Holland starts as IRCSET funded postgrad

I would like to welcome Tom Holland who recently started his Ph.D. with the Systems Research Group in the UCD Complex and Adaptive Systems Laboratory under my supervision with Prof. Paddy Nixon. Tom is starting his research in the area of richly sensorised pervasive computing environments. Tom has received a full scholarship from the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET). He is already busy at work on the course work component of his structured PhD program, a small Ubisense location project and we have had initial contacts with an industrial partner for collaboration on his research. Tom completed his B.Sc. in Internet Computing at the University of Hull in 2006 and previously spent 3 years in commercial development roles with digital agencies in Newcastle Upon Tyne and most recently with Acknowledgement Ltd. in London. Welcome to the SRG Tom and your first paper deadline is April for UbiComp 2008!

May 2007 UbiComp 2007 PC

UbiComp 2007 PC

In May of 2007 I attend a two day meeting as a program committee member in Toronto for the 9th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing. This will be held on 16-19 September 2007 in Innsbruck, Austria. It was a great event with many of the leading figures in UbiComp in attendance. In addition I’m glad to say it was a very educational experience as I got to interact with some great people in fruitful discussion. I got to see first hand, yet again, how much time and effort goes into putting together a top class conference program. It reminded me very much of the dedication shown during the Pervasive 2006 PC meeting in Boston in Dec 2005.
