2023 Sydney, Australia

From 2020 – 2023 he was head of school for the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) in the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia.

I took over this role during Covid-19 and in this role I led a team of over 55 academics and 10 professional/technical staff along with 300+ casual members of staff. This school teaches over 4,500 students in four undergraduate, two postgraduate, two online and off campus programs (WSU). In this role I led the development of a new school strategy, extensive recruitment, building master-plan redevelopment for the school along with helping to develop new, and proposed, institutes and centers.

I was particularly proud of managing the recruitment and growth in academic staff numbers, opening a short term fellowship program, establishment of a new center for Critical Digital Infrastructure, establishment of the AI institute (a faculty priority), support from the establishment of the Cyber Security institute, the refreshed John Lions program of events, the strategic investment in the trustworthy systems group as they returned from Data61, the delivery of the UNSW Online offering expansion along, the establishment of a research expo and the refresh of 17 new research groups (with over 25% led by women vs 0% when I arrived).

During this time, I was elevated to be a Distinguished Member of the ACM in Jan 2021, general chair of the ACM CHI conference in Apr 2021, elected to the role of Chair Elect of the ACM SIGCHI CHI Steering in 2022 and served as the Technical Program Chair for the ACM EICS conference in 2022.
