Jan 2021: ACM Distinguished Member

I was recently inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). As one of 64 members elevated this year, this nomination recognised “outstanding scientific contribution to the computing field”

The ACM 2020 inductees are longstanding ACM members and were selected by their peers for a range of accomplishments that move the computing field forward.  The ACM President Gabriele Kotsis explained that, “The active participation of ACM members, in our organization, and in the field more broadly, is the foundation of a global scientific society.” “With the Distinguished Member designation, ACM celebrates specific contributions of these members and their career growth as reflected in a long-term commitment to the field, as well as their collaboration with peers in supporting a global professional association for the benefit of all.”

The 2020 ACM Distinguished Members work at leading universities, corporations and research institutions in Australia, Canada, China, India, Qatar, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. These innovators have made contributions in a wide range of technical areas including data science, mobile and pervasive computing, artificial intelligence, computer science education, computer engineering, graphics, cybersecurity, and networking, among many other areas.

Nov 2020: The Future of Displays

Thanks to all the panel members and those who attended our SIGGRAPH Asia Frontiers Workshop today on the future of displays.

Today, the nature of human-computer interaction is changing what it means to experience computing. Every object or experience in life can be enhanced with computational support to provide enhanced experiences or communication opportunities. The very fabric of life is being rewritten with every new object created, an environment built or refurbished, and home or office upgraded.

In addition, the range of human senses involved in human-computer interaction has moved beyond simply the visual and audio. Human capabilities have yet to be fully employed when providing input to a computer. It is even more certainly the case that the plethora of human senses has not been exploited when computers are providing output for us. As a result, today when we think about display technology we need to step back and take a wider and more inclusive view of how computer systems present information for humans to perceive. The pixel is not always the point. Indeed the pixel can often get in the way of thinking about effective mechanisms to present information.

In this event, a series of speakers will reflect on their own experiences and research in the display of information for effective understanding. Some of the presenters are well known to the graphics community, however, others are sitting on adjoining fields more focused on human-computer interaction while other speakers come from outside either sphere of influence and to challenge our collective notion of what it means to effectively display information for human consumption.
