Apr 2008 Pervasive 2008 Tutorial

Context-Rich but Keyboard-Free Pervasive Computing – Pervasive Computing User Interfaces – Aaron J Quigley – Pervasive 2008 Tutorials

Clearly there are classes of computing application which will rely on the classical screen, keyboard and mouse interfaces for sometime to come. However, we are seeing the emergence of pervasive computing applications and scenarios which go beyond the traditional application design or even mobile computing application design. Designing User Interfaces for the disappearing computer is difficult. By its very nature Pervasive Computing is trying to make the computer less of a focal point, making it, dare we say invisible! The challenge therefore becomes to provide simple, seamless, natural and context-aware interfaces to complex, subtle and oft invisible pervasive computing applications. Instead of overwhelming the user with a plethora of options, research as shown the need to develop personalized user interfaces that leverage past and group actions in user interface interaction. This tutorial will provide an overview of the approaches taken in the development of user interfaces for pervasive computing applications to date.

Mar 2008 Postdoc HCI/Systems Engineering [Closed]

We had over 20 applications for these posts, thanks to all those who applied.

Post-Doctoral Fellow in HCI and Systems Engineering
March 31st Deadline

Fixed-term 1 year post (with a possibility of an extension)
Ref: 003291

Technology Research for Independent Living (TRIL) Centre is looking for a Post-Doctoral Fellow specialising in HCI and Systems Engineering. TRIL is a coordinated collection of research projects addressing the physical, cognitive and social consequences of ageing.

The main role for the TTP Post-Doctoral fellow is in the exploration of applied independent living research questions stemming from clinical, user-centred and ethnographic perspectives. This is a full-time position.

Dec 2007 Umer Rashid starts as IBM/IRCSET funded postgrad

Umer Rashid has joined me this week as a postgrad in the SRG. Umer has a Masters from the U-VR Lab, GIST, Gwangju, South Korea under the supervision of Wontack Woo. He comes to us with a number IEEE, LNCS and HCI publications. His Masters thesis is on Context-based Disclosure of Personal Information in Pervasive Healthcare Using an Ontology-based Context Model. Umer is based on the 3rd floor of the CASLso he can colaborate with with other Ubicomp SRG researchers.

Umer is getting an IRCSET scholarship under the Enterprise Partnership Scheme from IBM and will be working on Human-computer-interaction in ubiquitous computing environments. His initial focus is on the personalization of user interfaces, and privacy and information disclosure issues associated with interaction of wearable computing devices with context-aware services in ubiquitous computing environments. Initially with a focus on instrumented spaces for long term self and remote monitoring by/of elders, using off the shelf wearable monitoring devices. We expect he will be working closely with Tom Holland and a number of other ubiquitous computing researchers in the CASL we expect with IBM and Vincent’s hospital in time.
